ESSENTIAL TRACKS: Songs In Movie Trailers

29 Sep

Movie trailers are an art form unto themselves. They capture a full-length film in the matter of minutes. A great trailer manages to provide context, set the mood and hook the audience (see the Golden Trailer Awards).

The song selection can elevate the trailer beyond an extended preview. Below are 10 of the best songs (in no particular order) used in movie trailers. (Did I miss a trailer or song? Sound off below…)

  • Postal Service – “Such Great Heights,” Garden State
  • Explosions In The Sky – “Your Hand in Mine,” The Diving Bell and Butterfly (1:17)
  • Arcade Fire – “Wake Up,” Where The Wild Things Are
  • Muse – “Take A Bow,” Smashing Pumpkins – “The Beginning is the End is the Beginning,” Watchmen
  • John Maus – “Do Your Best,” Lying
  • Sigur Ros – “Hoppipolla,” Children of Men
  • Fergie – “Be Italian,” Nine
  • New Order – “Age of Consent,” Marie Antoinette
  • The Temper Trap – “Sweet Disposition,” 500 Days of Summer
  • MIA – “Paper Planes,” Pineapple Express (1:00)
