Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover aka the guy from Community), “I Love Clothes”

13 May

Thank god for my iPod. If it weren’t for the shuffle function, I wouldn’t have remembered that I put a rapper, Childish Gambino, on there a few months back. As you may know, Childish Gambino is the alter ego of Donald Glover (the comedian/actor from NBC’s Community). While his side project may seem like a lark, it’s actually pretty good and worthy of a listen. My favorite song from I’m Just A Rapper is ‘I Love Clothes,’ which samples Neon Indian‘s ‘Deadbeat Summer.’ Glover displays a talent for the rap game and I hope there is more to come in the future. SILS Exclusive: The Knocks, “Blackout (Samuel Remix)”

4 May

One of the SILS’s most popular songs in April was ‘Blackout’ by The Knocks. If the original caused the party and following blackout, then Samuel‘s remix is the hangover cure. His take on the track slows it down a bit, giving us a more relaxed vibe. Samuel flattens out the audio and adds his muted vocals, here are a cross between Cassettes Won’t Listen and Washed Out. His remix is equally addictive as the original.

No stranger in The Knocks world, Samuel worked with the production duo on his upcoming fall release, Trains To Wanderland, and provided the vocals on the popular Ellie Goulding cover, ‘Starry Eyed‘ (also available for download).

Drake + Lykke Li, “Little Bit”

3 May

Drake fully came onto the scene with his third mixtape, So Far Gone, spearheaded by ‘Best I Ever Had.’ However, my favorite track is the faux-duet with Lykke Li on ‘Little Bit.’ Though hardly different than the original, Drake’s vocals blend smoothly with Li’s falsetto and the heavy bass adds a nice flavor to the song.

If you haven’t already, you can download the mixtape here.

M.I.A., “Born Free”

3 May

Ok, now that the Ginger-Geonocide video hype has blown over, I finally listened to ‘Born Free’ and it is great! M.I.A. may have done herself a small disservice by pairing the song with such a controversial video only because it distracts from the track itself. ‘Born Free’ is a stunningly simple but layered track. M.I.A. wisely samples Suicide’s ‘Ghost Rider‘ and heightens the electroclash sound that has made her (and that band) famous. She is one of the few hip hop acts that can sample punk/rock without sounding disingenuous in either genre. (Listen/Download below.)
