DJ Car Stereo (Wars), “Explains It All” (Mashup Mixtape)

19 May

I’ve decided that mashup mixtapes are the best workout albums. If done correctly, they are a seamless hour of party music. And if you’re anything like me, you need something upbeat to keep you going between the 2nd and 3rd mile of your run! Another (awesome) mixtape to join the ranks of Girl Talk, DJ AM and Mochi Beats is DJ Car Stereo (Wars).

For his current Nickelodeon-inspired release, Explains It All, Stereo (Wars) teams up with Austin-based label, Artifact Workshop, “to deliver a custom hand puff-painted CD that’s just as quirky and nostalgic as the 300 or so samples contained within.” (Thanks press release!) And the best part, it’s free: download here.

Jay-Z/Ratatat, “Seventeen Problems”

5 May

Current Internet darlings, Ratatat get the mashup treatment from new producer, HTML. Their song ‘Seventeen Years’ serves as the backing track for Jay-Z’s ’99 Problems’. This is a simple, yet fun mashup and a nice reprieve from the Lady GaGa remix overload. (Listen/Download below!)

Mochi Beats (@mochibeats), Mash-Up Mixtape

4 May

In similar fashion to Girl Talk and DJ AM, Mochi Beats has released a mash-up mixtape. And much like the other two, it plays like an extended (42-min) track. All the major mash-up players are there, Notorious B.I.G., Kelly Clarkson, Jay-Z, Three 6 Mafia and Oasis, but by no means is this a rehash. Mochi Beats offers new interpretations of those before remixed bands and has the luxury of throwing in some new sounds into the mix.

I am a sucker for extended mash-ups, especially when they are as well produced as this release. Everything is free to download (as individual tracks or a continuous mix).

Dave Wrangler, “NASA vs YACHT”

12 Apr

I was listening to Dave Wrangler’s mashup, ‘Gifted’ (ft. Kanye West), when I came across the entire EP, NASA vs YACHT. Using songs from NASA’s Spirit of Apollo and YACHT’s See Mystery Lights, Wrangler creates a wonderful mixture of New Wave, Hip Hop and Indie. Listen and download below.
